Out of the Box, a new exhibition of women's art, will open on October 16, 2008 at the Women's Center of Jacksonville. An opening reception will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will remain open through December 19. The public is invited to view the works at the Women's Center located at 5644 Colcord Avenue, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, Mon-Fri.

On Friday, September 19, 2008, The Haitian community presents, Relief for Haiti: A Charity Silent Art Auction, showcasing the works of local Haitian artist, Overstreet Ducasse, and original works of art by artist living in Haiti. This event will be held at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, located at 101 West 1st Street in historic Springfield, from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. A portion of the proceeds for this event will benefit the Crudem Foundation. This foundation has been assisting the people of Milot, Haiti and their surrounding region since 1968. Additionally, a group of prominent local physicians will be taking a trip to Haiti following this charity event to provide medical and humanitarian aid to the Crudem Foundation. 8th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition
All Florida artists are eligible. The entry fee is $30 for up to 3 slides. Chosen artists will display their artwork in the Main Gallery of Gainesville’s historic Thomas Center from July 12th to August 24th, 2008. The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Amy Vigilante, current Director of the University galleries, School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida. Drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, fine crafts, and sculpture are eligible. Artists will display their work and compete for one $1000 prize and two $500 prizes, distributed during the award reception on July 17th, 2008. Awardees will also be eligible for entrance into a group exhibition, “Juror's Choice: 2008 Regional Award Winners” next year. The application deadline is May 21, 2008. Gallery Presents an ‘Evening with David Driskell’
Artist, historian, collector and curator Dr. David C. Driskell will speak about his life and work in the context of 20th century African American art at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Fine Arts Center’s Recital Hall. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a musical performance by Dr. Charlotte Mabrey and her Music Department students. Artist Jefferson Pinder, a protege of Driskell, will speak at 6:40 p.m., followed by a performance by the UNF Gospel Choir. In 2000, President Bill Clinton bestowed the National Humanities Medal on Driskell noting that he has focused attention on black artists sparking worldwide interest among art lovers, critics and historians and enriching America’s cultural heritage and history. Driskell will also sign copies of his recently published book “David C. Driskell: Artist and Scholar” following his lecture. For more information about Driskell and other Gallery events.

THROUGH OUR EYES 2008

The Ritz Theatre & LaVilla Museum invites artists from all disciplines to submit proposals for the 16th annual Through Our Eyes exhibit, featuring works by Jacksonville area African American artists. Artists selected for this exhibition will address the theme “Everything Must Change” to create new works reflecting some aspect of change, whether personal, social, political, environmental, philosophical or other. Proposals should include supporting references, explanations or descriptions, such as news stories, advertisements, anecdotes, individual experiences or other elements of contemporary life, which form the premise of the proposed work.

Highest consideration will be given to 2 and 3 dimensional works, video, poetry, music, multi-media presentations and collaborations that explore non-traditional and experimental projects, (i.e. “graffiti” art, site–specific installations or other innovative approaches).

Artists selected for this exhibition must be 18 years of age or older and agree to participate in scheduled public programs and outreach activities, including, but not limited to, the exhibit opening, Art Walk, gallery talks, workshops, artists’ market and other activities to be determined.

Complete and return the attached application by Monday, March 17, 2008. Notifications of acceptance will be made by Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

Two of Keith Doles paintings (The Country, 2007 and Pears, 2005) will be featured in the 2008 Landscape and Misc. Art Calendars published by Artwanted.com, an international forum and portfolio for visual artists. Members of the site submitted samples of their work last summer to several theme calendars including Still Life, Portraits, Landscapes, and etc. Congrats Keith!!
