Through our Eyes 2012: 20/20 Perfect Vision

Celebrating Twenty Years of African American Artistic Expression

Vision is the process of deriving meaning from what is seen. It is more than the concept of visual acuity, clearness of sight, or 20/20 vision. Good vision also involves the ability to analyze and interpret information and to respond to what is being seen; it allows us to understand things that we cannot touch, taste, smell or hear. Vision is the process by which we perceive space as a whole.”
From the American Optometric Association

To mark the twenty year milestone of Jacksonville’s longest running visual art exhibit showcasing new works by local African American artists, Through Our Eyes 2012 will feature twenty artists in the exhibit, “20/20 Perfect Vision”. Opening in the gallery of the Ritz Theatre and Museum on December 13, 2012, the show will run through June 30, 2013.

One of the outstanding characteristics of Through Our Eyes is to encourage artists to create and present fresh, innovative, experimental and non-traditional works that may utilize new media or inventive installation techniques. Any special requirements must be coordinated through the exhibit curator.

All artists who exhibit in Through Our Eyes 2012 are required to participate in the museum’s educational and outreach programs during the exhibit period. Please submit ideas for activities with your proposal (i.e. gallery talk, art class, workshop, demonstration, or other innovative art experience).

Artists wishing to be considered for this exhibit should complete an application, agree to the stated terms and conditions and submit a non-refundable $25.00 application fee.
Contact Exhibit Curator, Lydia Stewart (lstewart@coj.net) or Museum Assistant, Adonnica Toler (atoler@coj.net ) 904-632-5555.
