CALL FOR ARTISTS

The Jacksonville International Airport Arts Commission is now accepting applications from North Florida / South Georgia artists who are interested in working and displaying at the Jacksonville International Airport during the month of December.

Artists will create their artwork in a designated “Art Zone” at the JIA terminal. Artists will also be able to sell their artwork to holiday passengers.
COMMITMENT:
Artists must commit to being at the airport for at least two three-hour shifts. A small stipend will be given for travel and food.
BENEFITS:
There are numerous benefits of this program:
Name exposure to over 16,000 passengers a day.
Opportunity to sell artwork.
Opportunity to create and participate in art dialogues.
Showcasing Jacksonville as a city where culture and the arts are vibrant and alive!

DEADLINE:
Please submit via e-mail your resume, up to 10 digital images of work, and a letter of interest to Cabeth Cornelius (ccornelius@jaa.aero) by Friday, December 5th. Images must represent the work you would undertake while at the airport.

Artists chosen to participate in the program will be notified via e-mail on Friday, December 12.

ART OPPORTUNITY

Design a Logo for Jacksonville’s Biggest Art Event! What Is It? The Riverside Arts Market (RAM) – Jacksonville's spectacular new riverfront artists' market – is scheduled to open next spring. Beneath the sheltering canopy of the Fuller Warren Bridge structure, this huge all-weather weekend artists’ market has its Grand Opening tentatively scheduled for March 14, 2009. With the size of over one football field’s covered area, the riverfront market will feature nearly 150 artists displaying their wares, accompanied by musical entertainment, street performers, and food vendors, rain or shine.
Riverside Avondale Preservation, Inc., the non-profit organization which is coordinating this ambitious project, is seeking artists to design a logo for RAM. This logo will be used in all advertising, signage, tote bags, printed literature, banners, etc. We have already received some excellent logo ideas, but this venue is so unique and so compelling that we have decided to open up the competition to the entire Jacksonville arts community.Please submit your design(s) using the following guidelines:

Limited to no more than 8 designs per artist.
Entries must be in digital format, either .pdf or .jpg files.
Size is from 5 to 9 inches.
Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, November 12, 2008.
The winner will be notified by November 30, 2008.

On Friday, September 19, 2008, The Haitian community presents, Relief for Haiti: A Charity Silent Art Auction, showcasing the works of local Haitian artist, Overstreet Ducasse, and original works of art by artist living in Haiti. This event will be held at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, located at 101 West 1st Street in historic Springfield, from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. A portion of the proceeds for this event will benefit the Crudem Foundation. This foundation has been assisting the people of Milot, Haiti and their surrounding region since 1968. Additionally, a group of prominent local physicians will be taking a trip to Haiti following this charity event to provide medical and humanitarian aid to the Crudem Foundation. 8th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition
All Florida artists are eligible. The entry fee is $30 for up to 3 slides. Chosen artists will display their artwork in the Main Gallery of Gainesville’s historic Thomas Center from July 12th to August 24th, 2008. The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Amy Vigilante, current Director of the University galleries, School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida. Drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, fine crafts, and sculpture are eligible. Artists will display their work and compete for one $1000 prize and two $500 prizes, distributed during the award reception on July 17th, 2008. Awardees will also be eligible for entrance into a group exhibition, “Juror's Choice: 2008 Regional Award Winners” next year. The application deadline is May 21, 2008. The theme of this show is our world: landscapes, architecture, and things made of natural materials. All forms of media are sought. This Call for Artists is open to all women artists working in the Southeast region. Entries must be original and be postmarked by April 29, 2008. Gallery Presents an ‘Evening with David Driskell’
Artist, historian, collector and curator Dr. David C. Driskell will speak about his life and work in the context of 20th century African American art at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Fine Arts Center’s Recital Hall. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a musical performance by Dr. Charlotte Mabrey and her Music Department students. Artist Jefferson Pinder, a protege of Driskell, will speak at 6:40 p.m., followed by a performance by the UNF Gospel Choir. In 2000, President Bill Clinton bestowed the National Humanities Medal on Driskell noting that he has focused attention on black artists sparking worldwide interest among art lovers, critics and historians and enriching America’s cultural heritage and history. Driskell will also sign copies of his recently published book “David C. Driskell: Artist and Scholar” following his lecture. For more information about Driskell and other Gallery events.
